It was a victorious summer season for our 1sts volleyball and basketball teams as they claimed premierships by going through their respective competitions undefeated.
It was Hale’s 11th basketball premiership and the first since we shared it with Wesley in 2018, while our volleyball team backed up last year’s success to make it two in a row and three overall.
While both teams may not have suffered defeat, they fought through their own challenges on the way to the top.
Both teams lost significant members throughout the campaign with captains Alex Condon (basketball) and Ben Farley (volleyball) both departing for the Australian Institute of Sport halfway through the season. It was a credit to the depth of talent that the teams remained undefeated.
For volleyball, the crunch games against Aquinas were season-defining with both fixtures featuring close sets in front of passionate crowds.
For basketball, a narrow three-point win at the beginning of Term 1 at Aquinas and then a consistent four-quarter performance against Christ Church in Round 11 proved the difference.
At the conclusion of the season, Ben Thorpe (basketball), Tyler Fitzpatrick (basketball), Tiam Toufan (basketball), Finlay Gordon (volleyball) and Ben Ramsay (volleyball) were recognised with the awarding of colours.
With both teams having a good mix of Year 12s and younger students, volleyball and basketball are in good shape for the future.
